How to care for your donor hair wig
A human-hair wig made from donor hair can last a long time with the right routine. These are general care tips that apply to most human-hair units — for advice on your specific unit, WhatsApp us on 050 459 2012.
1. Detangle gently, from the ends up
Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and start at the ends, working up to the roots. Hold the hair above the knot so you don’t pull at the lace or knots.
2. Wash only when needed
Wash when product build-up or odour makes it necessary — not after every wear. Use lukewarm water and a sulphate-free shampoo, smoothing it downward rather than rubbing or scrunching. Follow with a moisturising conditioner, keeping it away from the lace and knots.
3. Dry it flat or on a stand
Blot with a towel (don’t wring), then let it air-dry on a wig stand or mannequin head. Avoid sleeping in a wet wig.
4. Use heat with protection
Human hair can be flat-ironed and curled, but always apply heat protectant and use moderate temperatures. Less heat, less often, keeps bone straight units sleek and wavy units bouncy for longer.
5. Protect it at night
Wrap the hair or wear a satin/silk scarf or bonnet to reduce friction and tangles. If you take the wig off at night, store it on a stand.
6. Go light on products
Heavy oils and gels build up quickly. A small amount of a lightweight serum or leave-in is usually enough.
7. Get it revamped
When your unit needs a refresh, a professional wash, treatment and restyle can bring it back. Book a revamp at Shika Hair Studio.
